“There is no mystery to the miracle of self-healing, it is courage, commitment and consistency that moves us from misery to inner peace” Yung Pueblo
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) looks at problems you are experiencing in the “here and now’ and works with you to understand these difficulties. We all engage in unhelpful thinking and/or behaviours but often we do not realise these are unhelpful, and so we get ‘stuck’ in vicious cycles. Your therapist will help you learn to not only identify unhelpful thoughts and behaviours, but how to change them. CBT aims to help a person to become their own best therapist. As such, it is helpful both in the short term and the long term.
Some of the difficulties CBT helps with which our experienced therapists specialise in include:
- Depression and low mood
- Stress-related difficulties
- Anxiety disorders, such as panic attacks, panic disorder, agoraphobia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
- Specific phobias
- Low self esteem
- Trauma and PTSD
- Couples therapy
What to expect?
Therapy will begin with an initial session which we call an Information and Support Session. This is where the therapist will work with you to determine a course of action that will suit your therapeutic needs. This is great opportunity for your therapist to understand the difficulties you are experiencing and for you to determine whether you feel you would like to engage in therapy.
Therapy can be short-term (e.g. block of six sessions) and at other times additional sessions can be very helpful. We recommend a minimum of six sessions after which the duration of therapy depends on clinical need and personal preference and will be reviewed with you frequently to ensure we are working towards your therapy goals. Each therapeutic session lasts one hour.
